Er wurde am 16. Juni 1944 von der Gestapo erschossen. In seinem Nachla fand sich ein unvollendetes methodologisches Werk, Apologie der Geschichtswissenschaft oder Der Beruf des Historikers die Erstausgabe trug noch den Untertitel Wie und warum ein Historiker arbeitet. Das Werk war ursprnglich 1949 von Lucien Febvre herausgegeben
